SUMMARY:GSMDC of the Rockies Vegas Spring Railroad Tunnel Hike - 8 mile back to back
DESCRIPTION:Date(s) of Proposed Pack Hike\n\n\n \nApril 17th & 18th 2021\n\n\nEvent Name\n\n\n \nVegas Spring Railroad Tunnel Hike – 8 mile back to back\n\n\nHike Location/Address/Directions/Map\n\n\n \nTrail Head is located in Boulder City\, Nevada just outside the Hoover Dam.\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/nevada/railroad-tunnel-trail \nParking and Trail Access\nTo reach the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Alan Bible Visitor Center trailhead\, from Las Vegas take Interstate 215 to I-515 south. Follow I-515 south for 5.8 miles to US 93 toward Boulder City. After 9.6 miles take a left onto State Route 166. Look for the Lake Mead Visitor Center sign. The trailhead is just over 0.3 mile ahead on the right.\nThere are outdoor bio restrooms at trail head and mile 4.5 of the hike. \nTrail Map Link:\nhttps://www.nps.gov/lake/planyourvisit/upload/Historic-Railroad-Trail-No-Header.pdf\n\n\nHosting GSMDCA Recognized Regional Club\n\n\n \nGreater Swiss Mountain Club of the Rockies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrief Trail Description\n\n\n \nJust 30 miles from Las Vegas\, near Boulder City\, the gravel Historic Railroad Trail hugs the hills on the southern shoreline of vast Lake Mead. The rail-trail offers panoramic views of the manmade lake and snakes through five railroad tunnels on its way toward Hoover Dam. \nEach of the five tunnels along the trail is 25 feet in diameter to accommodate the large equipment that passed through. In this unforgiving terrain\, it’s impressive to consider the sheer magnitude of force needed to blast the path. Pioneer trails from early dam construction parallel the trail intermittently.\n\n\nHike Coordinator Name\n\n\n \nAmanda Hoyer\n\n\nHike Coordinator Phone\n\n\n \n(702) 378-7929\n\n\nHike Coordinator Email\n\n\n \namandatarahoyer@yahoo.com\n\n\nEvent fee\n\n\n \n$10\n\n\nNet revenues will go to:\n\n\n \nGSMDCA Rescue\n\n\nType of Hike\n\n\n \n8 Mile back-to-back – 2 Day (16 miles total)\n\n\nEmergency Vet Clinic (verify availability before submitting this application)\n\n\n \nVCA Desert Inn Animal Hospital\n3065 E Desert Inn Rd\, Las Vegas\, NV 89121\n(702) 732-2210\nMON-SAT: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm SUN: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm\n\n\nClosest Hospital or Emergency Service\n\n\n \nDignity Health – St. Rose Dominican Hospital\, Siena Campus – Henderson\, NV\n3001 St Rose Pkwy\, Henderson\, NV 89052\nEmergency room: Open 24 hours\nPhone: (702) 616-5000\n\n\nWill First Aid kit be available on the hike?\n\n\n \nNo\n\n\nHow will hike mileage be verified?\n\n\n \nGPS\n\n\nIf ‘other’ chosen above\, please briefly describe:\n\n\n \nWoof Trax app to confirm miles. SUMMARY:Cascade GSMDC Strawberry Island 10 mile hike
DESCRIPTION:Date(s) of Proposed Pack Hike\n\n\n\n10/31 and 11/1/2020\n\n\nEvent Name\n\n\n\nStrawberry Island Back to Back hikes\n\n\nSponsoring Club\n\n\n\nCascade Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club\n\n\nHike Location/Address/Directions/Map\n\n\n\nStrawberry Island in North Bonneville\, WA\nDrive I-84 east to Exit 44 for Cascade Locks and Stevenson. After 0.4 miles\, bear right for the Bridge of the Gods ($2 toll) and Stevenson.Driving over the bridge for 0.7 miles\, make a left at the junction with Highway 14W for North Bonneville and Vancouver.Drive 4.2 miles and turn left onto Bonneville Drive for the town of North Bonneville. \nGo 0.1 miles to a junction and bear right onto W. Cascade Drive. \nProceed 0.4 miles and make a left turn onto Portage Drive. \nIt’s 0.2 miles to the trailhead parking area behind a baseball diamond. \nI can’t find a great trail map\, but this is somewhere go a lot. This is the best I can find\, the three red flag spots show the loop and if you zoom you’ll see there is a road that goes along the perimeter so access if somewhere to get injured: https://www.oregonhikers.org/maps/load.php?lat=45.6304&lon=-121.9792\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrief Trail Description\n\n\n\nTrails lead from North Bonneville around Hamilton Island\, which was noted as “Strawberry Island” in the journals of Lewis and Clark\, who remarked upon the abundance of strawberry runners they saw here. The current name remembers Samuel M. Hamilton\, who took out a Land Claim here in 1850 and had a mountain\, a creek\, and an island named after him (The” island” is now connected to the mainland). This hike is notable for its views to closeby features in the Washington Gorge\, such as Beacon Rock\, Hamilton Mountain\, and Table Mountain\, as well as some unique views across to the the Oregon side\, taking in Munra Point directly across and some waterfalls not normally seen except from the Washington side of the river. Cottonwoods fringe part of the island shore\, while the interior is mostly a grassy expanse. In the late summer and early fall\, low river levels allow adventurous hikers to cross to Ives Island\, west of Hamilton Island\, and locate the remains of old fishwheels as well as make a much closer approach to Beacon Rock (See the Ives Island Add-on Hike). Also\, a trail leads from the east end of the island to join the short walking circuit around the Fort Cascades site.\n\n\nHike Coordinator Name\n\n\n\nBonnie Huett\n\n\nHike Coordinator Phone\n\n\n\n(360) 909-4469\n\n\nHike Coordinator Email\n\n\n\ntroutcreekgsmd@gmail.com\n\n\nEvent fee\n\n\n\n$10 for those hiking towards title\n\n\nNet revenues will go to:\n\n\n\nCascade Club GSMD Club\n\n\nType of Hike\n\n\n\n8 miles/day – must complete both days – back to back hikes\n\n\nEmergency Vet Clinic (verify availability before submitting this application)\n\n\n\nNorthwest Vet Specialist\, 16756 SE 82nd Dr\, Clackamas\, OR 97015\n\n\nClosest Hospital or Emergency Service\n\n\n\nAdventist Health Portland\, 10123 SE Market St\, Portland\, OR 97216\n\n\nWill First Aid kit be available on the hike?\n\n\n\nYes\n\n\nHow will hike mileage be verified?\n\n\n\nPrior Hike\n\n\nWill scale be available at start of hike for weighing dogs?\n\n\n\nNo (if no\, dog’s weight must be provided by vet clinic documentation within 7 days of hike)

The entrance is a little less than one mile west of State Highway 75. The latitude is 42° 38′ 6.8″ north and longitude 88° 7′ 36.5″ west. It is about 47 miles from Milwaukee\, 71 miles from Chicago and 362 miles from Minneapolis.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrief Trail Description\n\n\n \nRed Trail (8.3 miles): The park’s longest trail touches on many vegetative types. On its far north end\, the trail gives a nice overview of what much of the park’s topography looked like before the landscape was altered by the Air Force. After the trail leaves the west junction of the Red and Orange loops\, it passes through some nice wetland areas before turning east toward the parking lot.= THERE ARE SPOTS THAT HAVE A SHORT CUT- THAT WE WILL CUT OFF THE 0.3 MILES. FOR THOSE WANTING 10 MILE 1 DA==> Green Trail (1.8 miles): The Green Trail is entirely north of Wolf Lake. A boardwalk between two small ponds is at the start of the trail\, a good place to look for waterfowl. This trail travels through a beautiful restored prairie and a small woodlot with good spring wildflowers. One of the finest overviews of Wolf Lake exists on the return part of the loop\, just past the turnoff for the Blue Trail.
